Visit the Doge’s Palace in Venice

Visit the Doge's Palace in Venice

In the Doge’s Palace, you can walk around freely. This includes the magnificent interiors that once served as the meeting and entertainment places of the Republic of Venice, where important decisions were made. You can freely enter the Hall of the Grand Council and the Doge’s apartment too.

In the latter, you will search in vain for the furniture. Each Doge took his own with him after his term of office. The visit to the prisons spread over the two buildings complexes will remain a special memory for you.

In the few humid cells in the cellar of the Doge’s Palace, the Pozzi, state prisoners, and high traitors served their sentences. At high tide, only the bunk remained dry. When walking over the Bridge of Sighs, it is essential to take a look through the small windows before getting to the Piombi on the other side of the complex.

Under the lead roof, it was unbearably hot in the prison cells. In order to prepare yourself, just read the memories of Giacomo Casanova. He also sat here until his escape. You can look at everything. He was also imprisoned here until his escape. The best way to do it is with a guided tour of Casanova’s prison.

Doge’s Palace as an experience

Doge's Palace as an experience

A visit to the Doge’s Palace is a piece of history that can be experienced and walked through in the city of Venice, and will lead through different eras. You will not only learn a lot about life in the palace but also about the cultural, political, religious and worldwide connections of maritime power.

The architecture and the art treasures of immeasurable value, which are still reverently standing today, witness the former fame and wealth of the city. But only when one recognises the difficult conditions, due to the lack of space and the water level, one does realise the extraordinary nature of this building.
